Paul Newman, RIP

I loved watching him act. He actually deserves to be remembered as a consistently good actor. It's great that that can be said about him, rather than he was just famous for being a 'personality'.

I think that's probably the greatest compliment that you can pay an actor in this day and age of 'celebs' who are famous simply for being disfunctional fuck ups isn't it? To be remembered purely for consummate acting ability with no other baggage attached seems to be an increasingly rare and laudable achievement. The Sting, Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid and in particular Cool Hand Luke all really made an impression on me as a kid growing up..

I made some salad dressing and gave it to a starving child.

I looked in the mirror and saw Paul's beautiful blue eyes.

He was also an accomplished race driver, and a well-regarded one as well. He was a regular at Lime Rock's road racing course and I never heard a word said about him as a racer that was anything but respectful. He was not a celebrity racer, but a racer who happened to also be a celebrity.

Did you know that 100% of the profit made from all Newman's own products was given directly to charity. He never made a big deal of that, just did it because he was a truly great man.

Does anyone have a problem eating dead celebrity food? I remember seeing some Linda McCartney products in the supermarket a couple of years after she popped her clogs, and seemed kind of gross, as if the food was actually made of Linda somehow.

As usual in the UK we are miles behind in the celebrity food stakes. Who have we got? In the States you can get food from George Jones, Smokey Robinson, Fats Domino, Karl Rove, Bette Midler, Walter Kronkite, Woody Allen...

We're a joke, frankly.
