I'm trying to do my monthly reports and one of the files upon opening says "This file is locked for editing by xxxxx, do you want to read only, notify or cancel".

This is normally fine as I just go and shout at xxxxx to get out of the file. However, she is not in the file and hasn't been since 11am. There is no excel open and I have even got her to restart her computer but I still get the same message.

She has not been logged onto it on a different computer and I'm at a bit of a loss as to what to do.

I've opened it as read only, made a copy with a different name then tried to delete the original file but then get an error that it is in use.

I've managed to roll back the file to an older version of it but now it is saying that it is locked for editing by me and I've restarted and still have no joy.

Anyone have any ideas?

Have you tried a cup of calming herbal tea?

I've had about 19 cups of coffee. That might not help

Are there any temporary files in the folder with the spreadsheet?

No, nothing there apart from the actual files.

Turn everything off and go home. It'll probably have sorted itself out by tomorrow.

That's basically what I'm hoping.

Otherwise I guess I'm just going to have to boot to DOS and map the network drive through there and delete it that way which sounds tedious as I have no idea how to map network drives in DOS.

net use E: \\server\share

(the drive letter is an example; it can be any unused letter)

You can also add persistent:yes/no depending on whether or not you want it to be removed afterwards

Assuming when you say DOS you mean command line windows, rather than actual DOS!

Fortunately the highly sophisticated tactic of "Leave it overnight and hope it sorts itself out" has worked again.

Another one is 'get someone to look over your shoulder while you try to replicate the error'.
