Brace yourself for a dozen reruns of every appearance on Wogan or Parkinson where he was pissed, incoherent and giggling.

I'll be interested to see if George Best gets a mention on French telly tonight or if, as I suspect, they've never even heard of him. He must hold the record for the longest time being a complete waste of space after having been good at something once. Unless there's some child co-star of Charlie Chaplin that's still alive and has never done anything else ever since 1916 or something. Or another example? There's that giant tortoise that's still alive that they reckon was living in the Galapagos Islands when Darwin was there, but that's hardly being good at something, it's just being good at staying alive for fucking years, and it's still good at that to this day. Nope, I think George Best takes the record.

They had Chris Martin out of Coldplay on a chat show here last night. It's really strange because they ask the questions in French and the English speaker replies straight away in English, and then there's an immediate voice over in French so you can't hear the actual English reply, but the audience in the background are nodding along to the English answer as if they all understand it, but they're supposed to be French.

How do they do that?

Assuming it's all pre-recorded, they must edit out the bit where the English guest goes, "Er, sorry, what did you just ask me?" and then get him to answer twice so the audience can have the reply translated and nod and smile in the right places when he answers again.

Either that or they all have tiny little in ear speakers and super fast translators. Or they're just pretending that they don't speak English, and the guests are just pretending they don't speak French. Chris Martin looks like he'd probably speak French, along with Latin. And he's got a whine second only to Edith Piaf. I think it's all a conspiracy.

CNN is doing quite a lengthy report this very moment. So, maybe France will mention him too.

Personally, I don't give a shit.

I feel no sense of loss at the death of a man whose last sporting achievement took place a decade before I was born. A man who turned his back on football and on his fans in favour of a life of alcohol and domestic violence. For too long has George Best's behaviour been excused by the fact he was once good at a sport. He may well have been a great sportsman, but that's not what I'll remember him for.

I see the predicted descent into anarchy failed to materialise. There was almost a sense of disappointment in the reporting when the licensing laws didn't result in the collapse of society.

It was always kind of ridiculous to think that most people are only an extra drink away from savagery, and if someone didn't keep them out the pub they'd suddenly change into a violent vandal.
