Can't really fault that selection. Poly Styrene out of X-Ray Spex was fucking excellent. Can we just add more YouTubs then?

The Members - Sound Of The Suburbs

...oh, I've got to go out for a bit. I'll find some more later.

No I don't have TV. That youtube site is great, now I can listen to all my old punk records again that I had many years ago. It seems like it is a new site as I have never come across it before. By the way Discharge are from my home area of Stoke-on-trent. Another good band from there were The Skeptix but I couldn't find any good early videos of them.

I was trying to find some Buzzcocks, but the video clips on YouTube don't even start to do justice to the records. Think they were a listen band not a look at band.

Sort of vaguely connected but a few years later, anyone remember Malcolm McLaren's Double Dutch? Hadn't seen that video in years. Ace.

Thanks for flagging this up, Mask - this...

is one of the best music documentaries of all time. The footage of Macgowan is electrifying and the performances of some of his songs by Christy Moore, Nick Cave and - especially - Ronnie Drew of The Dubliners are unmissable.

We here are the Buzzcocks with their biggest hit Ever fallen in love with someone you shouldn't have fallen in love with on top of the pops all those years ago back in 1978. Incidently contrary to what it says on the video this is not a live performance as all top of the pops shows had bands miming to their records. And they wonder why viewing figures for that programme plummeted in recent years. [Wink]

Here is also a video of Green Day at the Woodstock festival in 1994 playing their massive hit Basket Case on the eve of their breakthrough into mainstream chart success. Once they became famous though most of their original punk fans desserted them calling them pop star sellouts.

Anyone catch any of this last night? It was pretty good. Eric managed to not diss Costello, which was disappointing, although Costello did make a snide comment about Eric. **** .

Larry Wallis was funny, "The drug we were all taking was Mandrax. Mandrax is a hypnotic sleeping pill. If you take it you go to sleep. If you can overcome the sleep you become an idiot."

I saw the Friday night stuff [stiff] but missed the second part. Was quite good, but not as convincing as a part of rock history as other documentaries I've seen recently, including the one about Blondie. What I mean is, there were a few good songs, and Dury and Costello are all-time greats, but most of the Stiff Records stuff is pretty average really, let's face it.

Also, saying that a lot of the current wave of guitar bands look and sound like Dr Feelgood, implies that the new bands have even heard of Dr Feelgood. It's just a standard pub rock look and sound which you can get with early Who, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers and all those sort of bands, right on through early punk and American New Wave etc etc. It's just blokes with guitars wearing normal clothes instead of stage costumes.

Still, can't complain about the quality of these BBC4 documentaries about the lesser known side of music. Hopefully there will be loads more to come. God knows there's enough subjects left to cover.

By the way here is an interesting vintage documentary on some London punk squatters from 1983:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c0IZdP3x66Y
In it says their leader is 24 which would make him 47 years old today. That makes you think doesn't it?
