The company I work for is about to get some shiny new web servers, load balancers and other exciting bits of kit. Now, since before I joined, they have used characters from Star Wars as the server names.

I object to this as it must be the most cliched, geeky way to come up with machine names. But try as I might, I'm struggling to come up with a better idea.

It'd be nice to steer away from the old favorites like planets, anything relating to sci-fi etc.

Any ideas Tee-mo?

Oh god, I know what you mean. One place I worked at used places from Lord Of The Rings (Mordor? That sort of bollocks anyway) and another used Star Wars planets which I only understood when I watched Star Wars again and went, hey, "Alderaan", they've got a server called that at work. *click/lightbulb*

Why not use something like Old Testament book names so they think you're a weirdo? People that worship Star Wars and Lord Of The Rings always think god botherers are weirdos. You could pick innocent sounding ones like "Ruth", "Joshua", "Amos" or "Jonah" so they only realise when they're watching Tony Robinson's Old Testament Time Team special on a Sunday afternoon or something. That would be sweet revenge. Then when they buy a new server one day suggest "Song Of Solomon" and see what happens.

Our new Sun boxes were named Bert and Ernie, and on my home network all of my PC's/network devices are named after Bond Girls which is good in that they are recognisable, nostalgic and there's a lot of them.

- Pussy Galore
- Goodthighs

Yes, that might work.

Just giving them normal human names could work too...

"Glen, load average is through the roof on Barry"
"Let's route to Ian"

I used to work somewhere that named their PCs after animals in the native Setswana tongue. Tao and Kubu dont stick in your head as easy as lion or hippo. A good way to learn a few of the local words thou...

One of our original servers was made by Dell and was thus been named "Dell_Boy". It was soon joined, predicatbly enough, by "Rodney" and "Trigger".

Maybe all PCs on a network should also share a surname.

You could name them after diseases. That would be cool. I'm sure people would enjoy the whole virus/ computer connection thing, especially if they're fucking half-wits.

We once labelled our radios at work with characters from The Flintstones. Some very interesting conversations were had that day, until the manager came back, took the labels off and replaced them with the old letter system.

I was known as Bam-Bam for a long time tho...
