So what the fuck is going on here? There seems to be a rising fear that "Kids Today" aren't going to learn to spell or speak or do anything because of texting and the internet and all that garbage. But what about the generation before? My generation. We've got no fucking excuse, growing up in a time where mobile phones were the size of a small dog and were things that you used to speak to someone using your mouth rather than engaging in an endless stream of txts lacking both clarity and nuance. Emails weren't even a thing, standards were supposedly higher in school and yet I see updates like this on Facebook:

"iv been doing the same thing its soooo boring but iv finally think iv found one"

"your daughter is a genius where does she get that from cant think!!" (not about my daughter, by the way. My daughter is an idiot and, if I'm honest, a grave disappointment).

"hope you are actually eating now kids went to bed at 6pm!! asleep by five past whoopee doos another day closer to meeting our new baby!!"

Presumably these people have jobs, or have read at least one book? How on earth is this an acceptable way for thirty year olds to communicate? Is there no shame? Some of these are from people who shared the exact same state school education as me. And yet they sound like ET's first broken attempts at speaking English. This probably should have gone in rants.

This is probably the mundane reality of the sort of telepathic communication that sci-fi thought we were all evolving towards. But, instead of a constant interflow of pure thought pregnant with profound meaning what's actually going to happen is we'll get lazier and lazier and more and more vapid and stupid and inept until NO COMMUNICATION WHATSOEVER IS ACTUALLY REQUIRED. So, we won't be living in a silence borne out of a higher plane of human interaction we'll be living in a silence of dribbling, shuffling, wanking morons.

I think this is what some people actually want. I was on imdb the other day and someone complained about I Heart Huckabees on the grounds that they were sick of films where they "had no idea what the characters were going to say next".

Yeah, that's what Hollywood needs. An increase in predictable film scripts.

Speaking of predictable... I've recently been engaged in a number of online spats, where I've been defending the current output of Alan Moore and Grant Morrison. The main charges against them seem to be that they require too much reading and too much effort. On Amazon the word 'clever' is increasingly used pejoratively. It's very depressing.

That one would really confuse the Romans, I imagine. So there are some benefits.
