Edited for bloody useless UBB. Honestly, I've been doing this internet lark for years now you' think I'd have got the hang of it by now.

You could be right. Just look what being our maters and paters has done to most of our parents. I bet they were normal before they had us.

She's not really a she, is he?
How could anyone possibly take to heart any advice doled out by someone that looks like that? Also, as Ralph (and Louche) kindly pointed out, most of what (s)he 'advises' is so rage-inducing that it's a wonder (s)he sells as well as she does. I'm not even a parent and (s)he makes me seethe.

My mother's never been normal. And she's getting worse. She thinks puppy training classes are the apotheosis of a social life.

quote: SAN JOSE, Calif. -- August 9, 2006 -- Adobe Systems Incorporated (Nasdaq:ADBE) issues a warning about Gina Ford related imagery.
It has come to the attention of Adobe Systems that users of its flagship Photoshop software have experienced difficulties when working on images containing the likeness of Gina Ford. Users report strange behaviour, including Photoshop closing without warning as soon as one of these images is opened. Some users have described further problems, such as Photoshop uninstalling itself, deleting all related files and ejecting the CD-ROM drive if an Adobe disc is in the drive.
Until Adobe is able to launch a patch to rectify the problem, they recommend that nobody attempt to open any photograph depicting Ms Ford, or any graphic file which references her name.
Users of Mozilla Firefox and Microsoft Internet Explorer are also warned to avoid viewing such images, as similar problems have been reported to affect these browsers.

I am not suggesting anything derogatory about you and your family for rl, but my sister tells me that parenthood can do things like kill your social life so one does have to ask whether parenthood shrank your mum's idea of social life somewhat so that this now seems normal?
Of course, you know your own mother.
Both my parents are weird but I have since come to think that they might not have been had they avoided myself and my siblings.

This sort of thing, which obviously includes my own dotty parents, does rather make me wonder how many kids end up feeling like they are older and saner than their parents.
Do you think our kids will see us like that in years to come?

There's nothing more demeaning than being made to look silly by children. Do they point at your beard ralph? Do they laugh? I remember when my brother and his mates were play-fighting in the living room and I can't remember what happened but it caused my brother to end up on the floor and turning around to my father and saying 'you silly **** '
The expression of his turning from laughter to deadpan and sounding off "you boys had better leave" was almost as funny as my brother cowering in the corner, just knowing he was going to get a tanned arse. When I put it like that, it sounds like we were under some kind of brutal regime, but it was the eighties. Kids were wild. We were given 'the slipper' back then.

And my mum's not even on the internet to be offended by it. I can't think of anyone I can be bothered be defame, I'm afraid. I'm old now, the rage has all gone.

i had a sex dream about alan sugar last night. i feel like my brain has turned against me entirely. it was a really good dream, but the other person was sort of faceless, as the other person in a sex dream sometimes is, just hands, grabbing, breath, but you kind of know who it is subconciously. then i was eating my porridge in front of the telly later that morning and the alan sugar advert came on and i just sat there with my mouth slightly open and porridge juice running out of it because it was coming back to me that in my dream alan sugar violated me in a first class british railway carriage.
i hate my brain. first alex zane, now this. i really need to get laid.

last night I dreamed that I was helping my friend to make a film that was going to be about some disaster in the jungle, and we all acted a couple of hours of ad libbed stuff, and shot some scenery, but then failed to go through the rushes and had to do it early the next morning, which made him really angry. I woke up in the night buzzing from the sense of frustration at not having gone over them before we went to sleep.

But a) no-one was having a pop at louche's mum except louche and its her mum and it seemed more a comment than a pop to me, and b) even if we were, that would be on-thread as it would count as defamation, wouldn't it?
But you want to get serious, so here goes.
So should people in the public eye be protected from libel and defamation? Not sure exactly what the definition is of those.
Should they be protected from chat room discussions?
Well, I am inclined to say no because they put themselves into the public eye and make their living out of public opinion and it is nampy-pampy and hypocritical to try and censor that opinion. The internet is not the TV, which is actually a private domain made to look public and which largely makes it's money from charging for positive spins on stuff; it is still , on the whole, a public domain.
It is however, a mute point as to how much right a forum on a domain which is a public company making profit, such as handbag, can be called a 'public domain' since the owners of the site can censor, manipulate and exclude viewpoints that they don't like.
Where do you draw the line between a genuinely free chat room and a manipulated one? Is there such a thing as a genuinely free discussion forum? I mean, Urban75 might be considered free, as might tmo, but both are privately owned discussion forum. Urban has a definite ethos that drives out dissenters in the end, so should it be counted as genuinely free opinion? If not, even so, should commercial companies be protected from what it's members say? It has been reported in the Guardian in the past so presumably it can have an impact beyond its borders.
Even if we accept privately owned chat rooms or whatever should be exempt, should perhaps overtly commercial chat rooms be willing to accept that other commercial interests should be protected from them and their interests?
I personally would allow privately owned, non-profit making discussion sites to get on with it but would be more willing to see commercial sites responsible for the opinions expressed.
