Ringo, if you were about to start using public transport to get to work then I'd say, yeah, you are going to get pretty chilly of a morning standing around at a bus stop. But cycling - get this - doesn't make you cold. All you have to do is protect your extremities - gloves, warm shoes and woolly hat and you're sorted. On really, really cold days you might need an extra sweatshirt or something, but most the time you're completely self-heating.
Most winters in England for at least the last 15 years have only had a few days where it's even been a little bit icy, let alone blizzards and all that stuff we used to have.
I've droned on about this before, but it's far more uncomfortable cycling home on a hot afternoon in the summer than it ever is on a cold morning in the "depths" of winter.
The perception of cold comes from going from a centrally heated house into fresh air, then into a cosy car with frosted windows (not actually a sign of genuine cold weather), then out of the car at the other end and into another heated building. The 30 second exposure to the outside air between those saunas is bound to feel a bit arctic in comparison.
Ralph, the mathematical tree thing only works if you’ve already got enough trees to cover the amount you would need to last as long as it would take for the first tree to reach maturity. This depends on the rate at which you use them. If, for instance, you cut them down at a rate of 10 trees a year, and it took 15 years for a tree to reach maturity, then you would need to have 150 trees to start with. You’d also need to actively plant new trees rather than allow them to reproduce naturally, because if the trees were allowed to reproduce naturally you would almost certainly consume them at a greater rate than they reproduce. If you’re looking at it that way then you need to factor in where these saplings are coming from. I’m not familiar with the ins and outs of how trees are grown commercially but I assume they are, in large plantations. You then need to consider the resources needed to grow these trees in terms of machinery, manpower and money, all of which need to come from somewhere. It’s not enough to simply suggest that you are completely self sustained because something in the equation comes from outside, and that needs to be factored in too.

It doesn't quite work like that though, does it? Coppicing is the historic option which worked for centuries. The problem we've got now is that ginormous rain forests are being hacked down wholesale, not managed in any form whatsoever. I don't think Ralph, even with his simpleton American ways and raging chopper fetish, is doing that.

Considering that as of Thursday I'll be spending absolutely 0-00GBP/month on fuel, you're probably saying this to the wrong person
