I love it! You wake up in the morning and there it is - that little something in the air that tells you that summer [ahem] is being gently elbowed out of the way by autumn. I can't really explain it. There's just an edge to the air that is crisper and cooler.
I am lucky in that I love all the seasons in different ways. But this particular time of year for me is the absolute best. It makes me want to be outside for the entire time, either up on Exmoor climbing hills, or on the beaches of North Devon doing mammoth treks. It fills me with a feeling of vitality and I want everything around me to be "pure". I start eating more healthily, I stop drinking alcohol [this is for a limited period y'unnerstand], drink my two litres of water every day etc. I also get a feeling of extreme restlessness though, which can make me a bit um, odd.
Do other TMOers get like this? What is your favourite time of year? Dontcha just love the seasons changing?

I do actually know exactly what you're talking about and normally I look forward to Autumn with great nostalgicipation, but this Summer has been a genuine failure and spent all its time pretending to be Autumn anyway, so it won't be quite the same. Also, I have a big garden this year, surrounded with trees, and I have a feeling we're going to be buried under several feet of orange leaves very soon.
I think my favourite season in the North West, as opposed to Autumn in London, would be Spring. It's all countryside round these parts, new born lambs still skipping around the fields before they get dragged off to the executioner, baby rabbits trolling around on the verges blissfully unaware of their fate, and flowers and weird insects everywhere. And daylight. We don't get much of that for about 8 months of the year.

Hmm the idea that the halcyon days of sitting on the beach relaxing, Supping a beer on the terrace of the leidseplein watching the beautiful world go by, of wonderous holidays full of relaxation are passed, and that the coming months of long cold nights, cutting icy winds, depressing grey days, coming to work and going home in the dark are coming?
Yeah bring it on
The only thing Autumn is good for is for my photography, but that ain't much cop when I am stuck 300 miles from my camera.
Part of me is completely with Abby on the "Oh god no, the Summer's over" tip, another part was thinking exactly what Saltrock has expressed yesterday as I walked to the shop next to work, and a crisp, distinctly autumnal, sun shone at me through the leaves on the trees and a chilly breeze flapped at my back.
I'm cool with most of the seasons, but I increasingly dislike winter, especially in London. It's just so fucking dark and dreary and dirty. I'd like it a bit more if it snowed here with any regularity.

I adore Autumn. Red gold and tawny, crisp air, pinch of rosy red cheeks, sparkly eyes slightly teary from wind chill. Catching leaves as they spiral down, crackling, into drifts. It's one year's luck if you can grab a falling leaf, you know. Fat shining conkers with their clinging pale silk in prickled shells. In October, hollowed pumpkins with grinning toothy mouths and glowing eyes. The bright explosion of fireworks in November and the smell of bonfire smoke drifting lazily through the night. Wrapping up in thick floor-length scarves and elegant leather gloves. Last year the season was defined by a red duffle coat and I padded round London, glowing, muffled against the cold. People look better in Autumn as well, the light has a different quality. In the morning, if the streets are long enough, you can see settled mist, matched by the huff of your breath.

I never used to be able to decide my favourite season. When I was young it used to swing between summer and winter, shifting in my late teens to spring and autumn. Although I retain a fondness for spring (green buds, crocuses, sparkling air) I've become rather enamoured of autumn of late. For reasons, see above.
Also, summer heat makes me sweat profusely and I dislike having a 'glowing' brow. Well, mostly.

IM NOT GIVING UP OF SUMMER 04 WITHOUT A FUCKING BITCHFIGHT.

Actually it's beautifully sunny here too and has been all morning. In fact, when I looked at the weather report, we're apparently in for anything up to 25 degrees by the end of the week, which really doesn't strike me as Autumnal weather, even if the sun is sitting a little lower than usual.
What's so great about Autumn anyway, except for this sickly nostalgic view of bright stark mornings and golden leaves? What you really get is sludge on the paths and constant rain, plus hazardous driving conditions. You might get the odd day where the weather is nice and clear, but even then you'll be stuck staring at it out of the office window.

Yeah that's right invite everyone to go for a drink on a wednesday when I can't go.
It may be sunny, but leave your greenhouse of a computer room and venture outside, you may notice it's not that warm. It's been positively chilly the past couple of mornings.
Personally I hope it's a blip, and we do have an Indian summer, but better to enjoy it either way I think.

(and i only like that so much because i used to listen to it a lot on acid and it makes me think of being 19, extremely thin and trollied with my mates. and the exact same thing can be said of the earlier series of mighty morphin power rangers with the scary aliens that were just a big eyeball on legs, yo.)

I can confirm that this morning was significantly colder than any other morning this summer (except for during the past 2 weeks when I didn't go outside so I don’t know about them), right up until the point I got a flat tyre, walked back home and got on the tube. Then it was quite warm and smelly.

Stamping on my nostalgia! I remember reading those when young and absolutely wanting to be a ballerina, despite the fact I'd bowed out of ballet classes after two lessons after being reduced to tears.
Also, my memories of autumn generally spring from my childhood (lots of parks and the river) and going to stay with my mother in the country. And fond memories of being sick after fairground rides at Bonfire Night. I am not quite sure how autumn in Holloway will compare.
I ate my lunch on a BOAT on the river, so I am enjoying this tail-end of summer.

Is that supposed to be 'boiling'? I was staring at it for ages thinking it was a clever Octavia word that I didn't understand.

Ummm, yes, sorry. Have been reading too much Soldiers Three and it's all dialect-like. I appreciate now that nobody else here has been reading it and therefore hasn't a clue why I'm talking like that. I consider myself spanked.

That's a joke by the way. I feel the need to point this out as it's been a while since we last had any contact and I like to believe I might still be in with a chance if I play my cards right.

What sort of dialect is it? I read a book about east coast of Scotland dialect a while ago that was called: Awa' an' bile yer heid! which I thought was pithy.

Ah, leaf sludge as opposed to the sludge of melting snow?
[Holy fuck. My life really must be a bit slack at the moment if I am discussing types of sludge on an internet forum. I need to get out more. Good job the weather's so good and there's a certain "something" in the air to encourage me! No, no, not that again........... aaaargh!]

Yes, that's the sludge i was talking about, as generally I describe the melting snow as slush*, although you may not know this as it's not something I like to make immediately clear when encountering new people.

One of them's Irish, and the other two are common soldier-types I think. I'm not very good with recognising where a dialect comes from when it's written down.
