An Air Force One lookalike, the backup plane for the one regularly used by the president, flew low over parts of New York and New Jersey on Monday morning, accompanied by two F-16 fighters, so Air Force photographers could take pictures high above the New York harbor.

The flyover was scheduled for 10 to 10:30 a.m. The plane is designated by the Defense Department as a VC-25 but is recognizable to the public as a Boeing 747.

Unaware of the planned exercise, scores of office workers flooded out of buildings, worried about the prospect of terrorism.

“People came pouring out of the buildings, the American Express Building, all the buildings in the financial district by the water,” said Edward Acker, a photographer who was at the building, 3 World Financial Center. “And even the construction guys over by 100 North End Avenue area, they all got out of their buildings. Nobody knew about it. Finally some guy showed up with a little megaphone to tell everyone it was a test, but the people were not happy. The people who were here 9/11 were not happy.”

Mr. Acker added: “New York City police were standing right there and they had no knowledge of it. The evacuations were spontaneous. Guys from the floor came out, and one guy I talked to was just shaking.”

This is exactly the kind of over-sensitivity people ridicule Muslims for.

Anyway. Obama should use this to make a point. When planes flew low over New York on Bush's watch, they caused the most devastating terrorist attack of the 21st Century. When it happens on Obama's watch, it's just a harmless photo op.

Americans on TMO might also like to note that - yes - we sometimes get caught unawares by weather conditions that you take for granted, but on the flip side we are capable of seeing a plane in the air without shitting ourselves in terror like a bunch of medieval farmers.

I suppose the British equivalent would be phoning up the newspaper to complain about insensitivity every time someone got on the tube with a rucksack.

Well, it looks like you've got more first experience with terrorists than ralph, so I think he owes you an apology.

Tip for commuters:

A swine flu mask practically guarantees you plenty of space on the train/tube.

Jesus Christ. How can you make helicopter jokes just years after the death of Colin McRae? Have some fucking sensitivity, man. You've no idea what it's like to live in a country where some people know a man who died in a helicopter accident some time ago. If you had any taste you'd strike the word 'helicopter' from your vocabulary.

Using Air Force One? Well I suppose that would've been some quite impressive terrorism.

But surely they'd wait until the Freedom Tower is completed in 2013.

That would've been the cherry on the cake. But, they should certainly have another go with any old plane they can get their hands on. Loads of them. Big planes, little planes. Flying them into skyscrapers, diners, cinemas, sheds. Anything. All over America. All the time. Until they get the picture.

It wouldn't be as fun without Bush though. Him and Bin Laden made such great enemies. Two spoilt twats with rich parents engaging in a giant shitslinging contest on the world stage. It was just brilliant. It felt like Big World Events but in reality it had all the complexity and depth of two eight year olds spitting at each other in the playground.

Actually, little planes might be best. Funniest, at least. Imagine, say, a hundred extremists in microlights flying into the Statue of Liberty, in a swarm.

I don't think 100 microlights would do a lot of damage to the Statue of Liberty. Not as much as Nuclear Man did in Superman IV - The Quest for Peace anyway...

lol. I didn't have a camera handy. In retrospect I should have picked up a disposable camera knowing full well that someone would call me on this someday. You'll just have to take my word for it...

I call bullshit. Every fucker who was within a 100 mile radius of 'ground zero' has been extensively interviewed, and the majority have had mini-documentaries made about them, reconstructing their movements up to, during, and after the events in horrifying pornographic detail. So if you can't at least point me to a video of you being interviewed by a sickeningly earnest journo, then I'm afraid it's just not true.

I was sharing a house with the guys who carried out 7/7 while they were planning it. Left me in an unpleasantly tricky situation with the rent on 8/7.

Why would you need to pay rent on 8/7? You had the rest of the month to fill the vacant rooms. Sounds like your landlord is a bit of a cock.

A decent landlord would overlook such a trifle. Hundreds and thousands of landlords, in fact. Makes me quiver with rage.

Ha! According to the 9/11 Truther movement 42nd and Broadway was actually taken out of commission that day and moved down to Chicago for "routine maintenance".
