I just did that thing where you go, hey, somebody just posted in games! So I went to look, but it was the post that I'd done 1 minute previously, and then forgotten about.

I hardly played any games this weekend - a complete waste. There was an hour or two of drunken Warioware on Sunday evening, but that was about it. Don't know where all the time went. I did spend a few hours learning to play Beethoven's Ode to Joy on the guitar, and then working it out with power chords, but it didn't sound nearly as impressive as I had hoped. Reading that back, it sounds like the kind of thing you would only do once you'd reached the absolute nadir of boredom, but it was quite fun.

I played a lot of games. PGR3, Castlevania, Elite Beat Agents, Lunar Knights, Halo3, Guitar Hero, (that nearly drove me insane trying to do the verse for the Woldmother track on Hard level) and demos for C&C3, Colin McCrae and Forza 2. There was nothing else to do but play games and eat bagels from the bagel shop. C&C3 is quite fun, but then I did online play and got my ass handed to me royally.

I picked up Kaido Racer 2 again which I hadn't played since around Christmas time, since reaching a bit of an impasse with one difficult race. Finally got past that race and spent all of sunday playing it. Great game, good fun, bit frustrating though.

I saw loads of people wetting themselves in anticipation and I wasn't really sure why. The first Forza is pretty good but it's not a classic or anything. Probably about the best GT clone available but nothing really holds a candle to Gran Turismo, except PC-based hardcore racing simulations like Live for Speed (which is still my most frequently played game)

GT4 was pretty poor though. Fantastic graphics for a PS2 game, stacks and stack of content, way more than any other game, but it's too big, too long, and the handling is all wrong. Plus it wasn't significantly improved in any particular way over GT3 A-spec, which I'd say is about as good as gran turismo ever got.
I hear from someone who has an advance copy of Forza 2 though, that the full game is considerably better than the demo. Graphics look stunning too.

I'm quite tempted by the new Mortal Kombat game on the Wii at the moment, as ign have given it a pretty decent review. I might trade in something shit like Lost Planet and Perfect Dark for it, maybe.

The handling on GT:HD is better but there’s something I don’t like about it. It’s something that GT4 was guilty of to a slightly greater extent, but specifically the way the rear end reacts to oversteer, and the response of the steering. Turning in under braking is great, they’ve got that spot on. A little dab of braking at about 1/3 power just after you turn into the corner and the rear starts to slide nicely, just as it would on a normal car. Problem comes when you then apply the power and the car seems to straighten up, following a certain angle. It’s weird, hard to describe. If you’re able to, play GT3, it’s more or less perfect in terms of handling. You can tell it’s not as sophisticated as the later games but in terms of emulating the way a real car reacts, I’d say it’s as close as a console game has ever got.
Interestingly, GT4 was the first game to use a completely new physics engine, whereas the first three games (which had great handling) were all evolutions of the same phys eng. GT4 was where the handling all went wrong, and it’s where the physics were significantly overhauled.
I’m not sure what my fastest time is off the top of my head. I seem to recall in the modified GTR getting somewhere near 1.10 but I’m not sure. To be honest, I don’t find it that entertaining to play, other than simple eye candy. It’s just one track and really just ten cars, and driving around and around over and over by myself gets boring really quickly. Hence why I’ve gone back to playing Kaido Racer.
Oh, one other thing, if you do play GT3, don’t play it on the PS3. The analogue controller button emulation is awful, there’s no control at all over the pressure you can put onto the buttons. Unless you’re a stick man (I tried this and it’s still way too sensitive) you’ll find that there’s a lot less control than playing it on a PS2 with the proper dual shock 2 controller. Using the sixaxis on GT:HD is great, on the other hand, so it’s something about the emulation rather than the hardware. Something to do with the range of pressures or something, because I know the sixaxis has more degrees of movement in the sticks etc.
I sometimes wonder if being able to pick up on small things like this is some kind of indication that I spend far far too much time playing computer games.

...or that your knowledge could be a serious asset to a gaming company? Seriously mate, you should consider it.
I must admit GT-HD is eye candy, and the thing I use to show off the PS3. And having only just smidged under 1'20" I've got a lot of practicing to do before I can get within even just a few seconds of your time, but like you say, 10 cars and one track and its shelf-life is quite limited. However it does fill me with hope of what we can look forward to in future games - I still think a lot of the games I have are not really pushing the envelope of what the PS3 can really do - at least GT-HD creates a line in the sand for developers out there to try and better graphically - its then just hoping that the gameplay can match it as well. I still pray that GTA when it comes out in October is going to do this and make me scream like a little girl at just how good it is - I'm counting on Rockstar not to let me down.

I would love to work as a games tester, but unfortunately you need to be pretty up on programming. I just don't have the skills.
I don't know if you've seen it, but there's a GT:HD demo video featuring a Nismo GTLM race car which they recently released. It kind of suggests there may be updates in the future with more cars etc. I know that when it was originally being billed as a whole game, there were several videos of loads of different cars on various tracks from the series, so it's possible there's a lot more content yet to be released for it. It does make a bit of sense for Polyphony to do this. They're notorious for taking years to craft their GT titles, so if there is something like this to keep your appetite whetted in the mean time, it takes the focus away from the fact they push back release dates etc. Kind of like they did with the original GT Concept Tokyo and Geneva games.
I'm really looking forward to GTA4. After reading a preview the other day I fired up San Andreas and it reminded me just how well made these games are. Rockstar definitely know how to put together a quality, immersive game. It will be interesting to see how the new 'mature' look of the game is used alongside what have typically been fairly whacky, off the wall mini games.

Games testing would be awful. I doubt you actually get to 'play' the game so much as just get a sheet telling you which actions to repeat a thousand times a day. Driving into walls, jumping off / on things, exhausting all possible inventory / dialogue combinations, saving and loading constantly, bumping into objects etc. And having to do it over and over and over again on every possible combination of game settings. Brr.
And then, once you've given it the okay, a massive glitch is found in the gold release and it's something you were testing, and it's all your fault when everything is fucked.

Silent Hill 5 Ps3 exclusive. Disappointing. I don't see myself buying a Ps3 until the damn thing is at least half the price it is now / has some games / is properly backwards compatible, assuming it doesn't completely take down Sony before that happens. This comes only a day or two after the positive MGS4 / 360 rumours.
quote: Currently, they have no plans to bring [Silent Hill 5] multiplatform, although they may be forced down that road if PS3 sales don't improve.
Here's hoping.

What the article actually says is that the developers think the PS3 is the only console on the market which is technically capable of supporting their vision for SH5. So what you're hoping for, really, is that the developers are forced into compromising their vision to make a slightly shonky version of the game, so you can save yourself a few pennies.
I thought you were a game fan, Benway? Why would you want them to make a version which isn't as good as they wanted it to be?

Not that I own a Microsoft console. Just my stupid Wii that won't go online because it's incompatible with Zonealarm and I'm too lazy to install another firewall.

Who uses zonealarm anyway. Isn't that the really shitty ancient software everyone used in the late 90s which did little more than stop certain websites loading?

SG5: I presume you're using the usb dongle to wireless your wii? Get rid of ZA, stick in the usb and then install Comodo firewall. You can properly open up to allow the software to tunnel, unlike in ZA where you seem to have to rely on luck. No problems.

I have no sort of dongle whatsoever just complete wirelessness.
What's strange is that it has no problem downloading updates for the wii. It's happy to do that, just won't let me get online any more.
Zonealarm is awesome these days. I go to a lot of porn sites and with that and avast I've never had any major computer problems (apart from unplugging hard drives)

if you don't have wireless internet then you can use their crazy wifi tunneling dongle to route through your PC's own internet connection. I spent hours pissing about with that thing when I got my DS.
I'm assuming that's what sg5 is using, else, why would zonealarm be interfering with his connection? Unless it's installed on his router.

I have no idea to be honest JBN. I have a wireless connection that works fine. The Wii used to connect absolutely fine as I have used it to view youtube videos. However it stopped working and gave me an error number. I googled that error number and it told me to input my DNS values into the setup field on the wii which would be fine, however it said under that section that there is a problem and you can't connect with a wii if you have zonealarm. I don't know why, I'm not a computer tech type guy really all I know is it used to work, now it doesn't and Nintento tell me that I have to get rid of zonealarm.

That doesn't really make any sense, SG, unless you've got a wireless gateway connected to a PC, and the broadband modem is hanging off the PC rather that going via a broadband router. Zone alarm is on the PC, but unless the connection has to go via the PC, it shouldn't make any difference. Unless they've made it a bit smarter nowadays and it monitors all network traffic on your wireless network and kills anything it doesn't like.
