GH2 is a bit easier and Rock Band is also easier apparently. However, if this is your first ever GH game then it would make sense that you'd get stuck at medium for a bit, then you'll suddenly have a breakthrough and beat it and the same with hard. (And possibly expert).

It really is a case of practicing quite a bit, and if you don't enjoy that then perhaps it won't work out too well.

It’s the whole ‘grind’ thing that puts me off games after a while. If I can’t get through something on my first couple of goes I just start to lose interest. I’m not really sure why I’m even playing it like this to be honest, since it seems to work in the context of a party game with friends but not so much sitting there by yourself for the weekend playing it.

Anyway, I’m onto the last set of tracks for medium so I guess I’m nearly at the point of moving onto hard. I really struggled with a few tracks, knights of cydonia seeming particularly sadistic.

Which kinda brings me onto one of my main problems with the game which is the way in which the tracks seem to have been made as hard as possible. There are points where, for instance, you switch inexplicably between playing lead guitar, second guitar, and bass, just to keep you playing the hardest riff that’s playing at any given moment. And I’m sure with some of these tracks, they’ve added in random guitar solos that don’t feature in the originals. Also, with some of the tracks, the pacing of the notes doesn’t seem awfully intuitive. I guess this is less of an issue in the harder levels where you play more or less every note, but on the easier levels where you’ve got complex riffs, you seem to play fairly random notes from them. It breaks up your rhythm a little bit. I don’t know if this is intentional or just a bit of bad design.

Anyway, I’m kind of enjoying it still so I’m not ready to hang up my axe just yet. It’s something different at least, even if I do feel slightly cheapened by the experience. Still at least I didn’t do what Thorn did and make a massive deal about telling everyone how shit these games are, then have to grudgingly admit my mistake.

You lying little shit! You stood on the sidelines and sniped at GHII when that argument was going on:

I think you owe Dr Benway an apology for having a go at his game, and you owe the forum an apology for then going to to lie about it.

Feh, I will apologise to the forum only because I can’t be bothered to search out that discussion and demonstrate how my comment was more a reaction to yet another barrage of PS3 abuse, this time relating to a game which, at the time, I was not in the remotest bit interested in.

As I don't have anything more recent than a PS2, I wonder if it's worth getting GH for the Nintendo DS? I think I saw an advert for this at the weekend, fronted by tall and freakishly-good-looking meedja couple Tess'n'Vern.

Yeah, it's still the greatest console ever made, so people are still making games for it.

The first two games are apparently quite a bit easier than Guitar Hero III. My understanding is that Guitar Hero II is the highlight of the series, in that it irons out the kinks from the first game and - being developed by Harmonix rather than Neversoft - stayed true to the idea of fun over difficulty. Yahtzee breaks it down here.

Mostly though it's down to the music, so just go for whichever has got more songs that you like.

I watched a video on youtube of some kid getting 100% on Raining Blood on expert. At the end he goes mental, really excited. Then you see him and he looks like Chunk from the Goonies. He calls his parents in to show them and they're all like "that's nice dear" in that patronizing way that parents do when their kid is really proud of something fairly unimpressive. But it's like, he's just done this utterly incredible thing. Those were probably the greatest four minutes of this kid's life. It was his moment of glory and nobody cared.

I think if I was going to put that much effort in, then I probably would just go out and buy a real guitar and learn to play that instead. At least people are impressed by that, even if it probably is a bit easier than 100%ing Raining Blood.

I always feel slightly ridiculous playing Guitar Hero alone. Especially when I catch sight of my very serious face. I mean, I'm stood in my living room in my dressing gown bashing coloured buttons on a plastic guitar. There is nothing remotely cool about that. Yet my face is DEADPAN and FOCUSED.

I get fiercely competitive when I play it in a group. And I'm rubbish. Same with SingStar. Some of my friends refuse to play it with me now because if I lose one of 'my songs' I start screaming 'SING IT AGAIN' in their faces.

Heh I've done that a few times. Although there are those slightly unsettling moments where you catch yourself imagining what it might look like if it were a real guitar...

I’m starting to feel it’s maybe my technique with the strum-bar that’s letting me down. Currently I’m just giving it a downward flick, but if I can get used to alternating between flicking up and down, I think I can start to hit the faster note combos with considerably more accuracy.

I think I’ll go back and do some of the easy tracks to get this technique down then see if I can improve on some of the medium tracks.

Yes, I realise this post is littered with innuendos.

I am pretty stoked about finishing the Hard tour on Rock Band drums last night. At one point I thought I was never going going to be able to finish Run to the Hills; I just couldn't see how it could be done. But! After working on my sticking and practicing the difficult bits I passed it by viciously abusing the way Overdrive works on the drums! With two stars! Which I didn't even think was possible! The screen was flashing red pretty much the whole way through the song and it became less about actual technique so much as holding my nerve, trying to hit what I could and not descending into blind panic.

I can't even do the Easy stuff on Guitar Hero yet [Frown]

I blame this on the fact that I bought a second hand controller and I think the buttons are a bit temperamental, and not on the fact that I am, in fact, shit.

Hippy, hate to say this, and please don't take this the wrong way, but we all were in the early days, well, shit - and you probably are at GH now - but practice and you will get there - the feeling of beating the boss even on level 1 and then going through "through the fire and flames" by dragon force which just seems plain mental, but on the buzz of killing the boss you'll breeze it, and you will no longer be shit. We were all shit, it happens, but it will pass, and being shit at GH is not a reflection on your good self.

Have faith

But.. On the other hand, it could be because of the controller being broken. My one lasted about 4 months before going decidedly dodgy.

I've been playing Echochrome, which is excellent (reminds me of Spindizzy, anyone remember that?) though extremely difficult and frustrating for a spaz like me. Also, not the best controls in the world.

I have been playing Soul Calibur IV which is a lot of fun. It's quite easy to pick up, but hard to master.

The proportions applied to the women's characters are pretty ludicrous and it's getting quite close to the Dead Or Alive series in that respect. Perhaps more so as you can actually destroy your opponents armour so that they are just fighting in pants which is entertaining.

Online is annoying as there are a couple of characters that can be very very hard to beat by just doing two moves, but it's mostly fun.

Is it worth getting if you raped every last drop of fun from the previous games? I didn't bother with 3 because it was basically exactly the same as the previous ones wiht slightly updated graphics. Is this anything different? I don't know if I'd even want it to be different, to be fair.

I read in a review that Team Vs mode is out, which is what 90% of my SC playing was comprised of, so this causes me some distress

Please answer before 5 so I'll know whether or not to stop at the shop on the way home and buy this

I had SC2 on the Gamecube and played that through quite a lot, but that had limited appeal as my only regular opponent was people who my girlfriend who wasn't a massive challenge.

This one is good as I can play online and get constant games against people which massively expands the lifespan.

If I only had the single player I'd probably be considering trading it in quite soon as I'm almost finished with that after a few days which isn't good.

So... If you're likely to play online or have people over to play it's probably worth it, but if you'll be playing it only solo, I probably wouldn't bother.

And... You can have more than one fighter in some modes and swap them in and out as and when you like.

Well I didn't buy it in the end but I've not ruled it out as a possibility. I do have friends I'd probably play it with, so I think I can wring some enjoyment out of it.

Only problem with these games is that I get really really competitive when I'm playing against people, to the point that people don't want to play with me after a while. [Frown]

Is braid worth the points?

I'm finishing off Blue Dragon which has been "alright" but not recommended.

I'm also playing Stuntman Ignition which has fun moments but unfortunately is mostly just about remembering exactly what is coming and what you have to do rather than relying on reactions.

I'm considering trying Viva Pinata again as Kate is on night shifts from tonight for the next eight nights, so I've basically got bank holiday weekend for porn and gaming.

fuck man, I stopped playing blue dragon. Got as far as having had a flying battle and I think I realised that it was going to go on for ever. I should carry on, but every fight is the same, just use the pokemon character to do the giant punch, and then use the sea, and they're dead.

Braid is good, definitely. Tough, and frustrating, but finishing the tasks is pretty rewarding.

Yeah. The fighting in Blue Dragon is pretty weak. It gets a bit more interesting later on but not much.

The characters are pretty weak and annoying.

The story starts off very weak, and picks up a little half way through disc 3. Mostly still weak though.

So. Weak battle system, weak characterisation and weak story. Not good for an RPG. I'll still finish it though.

And then I think I'll move onto Eternal Sonata.

Still playing Rock Band and - intermittently - Grand Theft Auto IV which got bumped out of the XBox for RB for a number of months. I dread to think the number of hours I've spent on Rock Band, probably three times as much as on the nearest Xbox game, probably longer than the entireity of the time I spent playing anything at all on the Wii. Just so endlessly entertaining. Can't remember the last time I had something dominate my free time so completely.

Hmm, it did pretty well on Metacritic, and it was only cheap.

Any other recommendations? I'm tempted by GT5 Prologue, but I reckon I'll probably wait for the full game.

The demo of Bionic Commando Rearmed was pretty entertaining.

Anything else to look out for? Other than a new TV, that is. My 28" SD set just isn't cutting it.

Oh, Force Unleashed is out next month, isn't it?
